As we’re all aware, the public sector is undergoing a significant headcount reduction at the mo. Bad news outweighs good and each morning, when I open the Stuff app, my brain quietly says ‘What fresh hell awaits me?’. While the impacts of this reduction are raising concerns/anxiety/blood pressure it could also present a hidden opportunity for the business community as well as job seekers hitting the job market for the first time in ages.
The main benefit from a recruitment perspective is that a smaller public sector workforce means more highly skilled professionals hunting for roles in the private sector. This will mean an injection of fresh perspectives and experience into the small business landscape, potentially boosting innovation and competitiveness. Public-private partnerships should flourish as small businesses partner with government agencies, creating new business and employment opportunities.
However, it's important to acknowledge potential challenges as well. The transition will cause plenty of uncertainty for candidates entering a very different job market to what they’re used to. They will need support to help them navigate this new world. The lingo, the expectations and pace of change may be different to what they've experienced before, but this doesn’t mean they lack desirable skills or won’t succeed in a role.
On the employer side, attracting government grade talent will mean needing to consider salary packages and company culture. Small businesses may need to focus more on making themselves attractive employers and, if they already are, they will need to ensure they’re communicating their value proposition correctly for this new candidate market.
Overall, my thinking is that the public sector FTE reduction could be a catalyst for small business growth, but careful management is needed. By capitalising on the talent influx, streamlining processes, and fostering a supportive environment New Zealand can turn this change into a huge positive for the private sector and small businesses in particular.
